6. Central Oregon

Central Oregon – Oregon’s playground – is the region between Southern Oregon and Columbia Gorge and lies east of the Cascades of the Willamette Valley. Because of the rain shadow effect, there is very little rain here and the landscape is largely characterized by drought. However, there is so much snow in the high mountains in winter that it is home to, among other things, the ski area at Mount Bachelor – the sixth largest ski area in the United States. The region is not heavily populated and is characterized by its more rugged landscape compared to the northern and southern regions. A popular vacation destination is the region’s largest city, Bend, where you can enjoy water fun on the Deschutes River and a variety of craft beers. Not far from Bend is another of the 7 Wonders of Oregon: Smith Rock is considered the birthplace of sport climbing in the U.S. and is great for beginners and pros alike. Smith Rock’s Misery Ridge Hiking Trail was my personal hiking highlight this year – you rarely see anything like it! There are also many horseback riding and mountain biking trails that run through the national park.
