8. Eastern Oregon
Eastern Oregon, in the most common definition, includes the eight eastern Oregon counties bordering California to Washington and Idaho to the east. The climate here is similar to that of Central Oregon. Large parts of this region are quite dry and more exposed to the seasons than the western part of the state. While some parts of eastern Oregon receive less than 250mm of rain annually, placing them in the desert category, the northern part of the region receives large amounts of snow in the winter. Little Switzerland is the name given to the region of the Wallowa Mountains – another of the 7 Wonders of Oregon. In summer, the mountains surrounding Hells Canyon offer an inviting freshness in the region’s otherwise dry summer heat. And in winter, the region offers some opportunities for winter sports.
For those traveling to Estern Oregon, don’t miss the second of the 7 Wonders of Oregon in the region: The Painted Hills were named for the different colored layers of stone that have been layered here over millions of years. There are several hiking trails where visitors are allowed to walk according to the motto “Don’t Hurt the Dirt”.
